Andover Massachusetts is a small town in the North East of the USA and probably took it’s name from early European settlers who came from around Andover Hampshire in England.
In 1948 Charlie Davidson opened a small store in Andover Massachusetts called the Andover Shop which primarily served the needs of the local Phillips Andover Academy along with carrying quality mens “trad style” clothing. In in 1953 he opened a second store in Havard square Cambridge Massachusetts which is home to the Famous University Harvard. This store served the satorial needs and wants of the college students along with Miles Davis Chet Baker, Stan Getz and countless others Jazz greats. Many famous and influential figures of the 20th and 21st century were also customers of this store
Engineered Garments “Andover Jacket” is the most “formal jacket” that appears regularly in their collection’s. Though fully lined in the winter seasons It is still soft on the shoulder and in its construction. Very reminiscent of the Ivy style between 1954 and 1967 that we very much associate with the students attending the eight Ivy League Universities (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Penn, Princeton and Yale) thugh also worn by strays and beatniks of that era. Over the decades the height of the buttoning point changed with fashion and moods, this was often sorted out by smothing the length of the lapel and using just the middle button or when wanting a higher opening the top two buttons were employed.
This seasons’ version is fully lined with a notch lapel / Two lower flap pockets and a flap ticket pocket on the right side / Slight angled flap chest pocket / Double vented. Another feature is the three button cuff. Typically a two button cuff is associated with this silhouette (maybe because Brook Brothers Jacket’s were two button) but the three button was a standard detail on the J. Press version.
