Although established in 1979 by Shigeharu Tagakiand it wasn’t until 1986 that Studio D’Artisan created it’s iconic DO–1 Jean. Having worked previously in France, SDA takes it inspiration from a French perspective on Americana and through their own production always looking to push beyond the original. A vanguard product with the soul of Made in Japan.
Noragi Sashiko Shirt
Back in an era when daily wear in Japan still consisted of traditional garments, cotton clothing was incredibly precious. It was essential for survival—protecting people from the biting cold and the scorching heat.
People of that time never let clothing go to waste; they reused garments repeatedly. Even when a kimono became worn out and tattered, they would carefully patch the fabric to extend its life. The resulting combination of patterns and the warmth of hand–stitched sashiko emit a unique, unparalleled beauty.
This shirt is crafted from our original “NORAGI SASHIKO” fabric, which replicates that very spirit of traditional workwear through a complex jacquard weave.
By strategically weaving in slub yarns (yarn with deliberate irregularities in thickness) of matching tones alongside heathered yarns, we have captured a faded, beautifully weathered colorway that mimics years of careful use.
To evoke the warmth of authentic hand–stitching, the direction and type of the sashiko threads running vertically and horizontally change periodically. This causes the fabric to shrink unevenly, creating a complex, textured surface with rich dimension.
Because the “NORAGI SASHIKO” fabric has a substantial, thick weight, SDA have created a versatile shirt that is perfect for wearing on its own, but also doubles as light outerwear all year round. The garment is finished with natural nut buttons.
