Although established in 1979 by Shigeharu Tagakiand it wasn’t until 1986 that Studio D’Artisan created it’s iconic DO–1 Jean. Having worked previously in France, SDA takes it inspiration from a French perspective on Americana and through their own production always looking to push beyond the original. A vanguard product with the soul of Made in Japan.
Indigo GL3 Denim Coverall Jacket
Built over half a century ago, the Toyoda GL3 is one of Japan’s earliest shuttle looms. Because replacement parts no longer exist, maintaining it requires scavenging components from discarded machines of the same model. It is an incredibly high–maintenance and inefficient loom, capable of weaving a mere 5 meters of fabric per hour.
However, denim woven on the GL3 possesses a rugged, raw grit reminiscent of denim from fifty years ago. It is truly a one–of–a–kind loom capable of expressing the authentic essence of vintage workwear denim.
To maximize these unique characteristics for D’Artisan’s new standard SD–1000 “GL3 Series,” they developed a completely custom denim recipe from scratch—carefully engineering the slub texture of the yarn, the yarn counts, the deep tones of the rope–dyeing process, and the precise density of the warp and weft threads.
It features a distinct unevenness and a rough, unsanforized feel that simply cannot be replicated by modern denim, which is produced efficiently and uniformly. Refusing to compromise, we conducted countless trial weaves before finally perfecting this pride of our collection.
This coverall jacket is crafted entirely from this original GL3 denim. Designed with a gentle, slightly flared A–line silhouette, it perfectly strikes a balance between authentic workwear heritage and modern style.
